survey monkey target audience questionnaire
survey analysis
I got 7 responses to each question. In question 1 I asked them ages, the main ages of the people that answered my survey were 16 and 17 however I did get an answer back from someone 20+. A negative about this question is that it shows that the people who answered my survey are of a specific age category but this did help me pick my target audience age as it shows what age group are interested in answering my survey about thriller movies.
In question 2 I asked whether or not they liked thriller movies this was a multiple choice question as I gave them 3 answers to choose from, this showed me how many of my target audience actually liked thriller movies.
For question 3 I used an open question to find out what my target audience would expect to see in an opening sequence we used 2 of these answers as inspirations for our film we used the very first answer as an inspiration for what our character would look like as we kept his face hidden as well as we could to create a sense of mystery the most you see of him is eyes. The second answer we used as our inspiration was answer 4 as this decided what the narrative of the opening sequence would be.
Question 4 was about the location we would use for our thriller film the most common answer we got was for it be set in the woods however we decided not to do this as we thought this was cliché we aimed to use a few locations in our opening sequence to help set the film into motion for our audience.
We used youtube to help us with question 5 as we wanted our target audience to tell us which of the opening sequences from 3 thriller films was their favourite. We done this so this we would have the best idea which opening sequences are the most successful and why they were so successful in gaining the audience attention more over the other 2.
Question 6 links in with question 5 as we wanted to find out why they picked the opening sequence as their favourite, so as well as analysing the opening sequence ourselves we asked them for their opinion as well.
We needed to find out what our target audience thought villain should look like so in question 7 we asked them for their opinion on how they think a villain should look like using a multiple choice question. 28.75% of answers were for someone wearing black however more of people chose masked figure but we didn't want our film to be cliché so we decide to dress our character in all black except for his shoes which were dark blue instead.
We then asked what weapon our villain should use most of the answers say he or she should use a gun or a knife. We did include a knife in our opening sequence but the main characters are never shown using the knife it is shown in a pan shot at the start on a counter instead suggestion that someone may use it later on in the film.
Question 9 was about what thriller film was our target audience favourite, the majority of our answers said taken was their thriller film because it had lots of action in it, this made us want to include action in our opening sequence but we answer 1 also leaped out at us as it said it liked nerve as it was relevant to their age group which we then wanted to make one of our main aims.
Finally we asked for advice for someone creating a thriller film. the answer we used from this as much as possible was the idea of not making our film a cliché thriller film.

The sixth sense was aimed at people with lower monthly spare money this means the narrative would have been simpler and easier to understand as stereotypically people wkht less income to spend have a lower paying job which means they may not be as educated as people with higher income jobs so the narrative of the film may have been less complicated making it easier to understand. Majority of people that went to watch the film were women this is unusual for thriller films as they usually attract more male based audiences however this may because of the main protagonist being a child that the film attracted more women as women are stereotypically drawn in by children due to their 'motherly instincts'. The age range adds to the idea the idea of the women being drawn in due to their 'motherly instincts' as most women by the age of 40-54 have children of their own by this point of their life or a family of their own.
The audience members of the silence of the lambs have a high amount of monthly spare money available to them this suggest that the silence of the lambs has a more difficult narrative to follow as the audience has a higher average income due to their monthly spare money implies they have a higher education so can understand more difficult narratives. out of the three films i have analysed the silence of the lambs audience lean slightly to the right where as the other two films audience's both lean to the left making the silence of the lambs more unique compared to other thriller films.
shutter island's audiences age range are 25-39 this suggest that the film may have more current and relevant themes that younger generations connect to compare to the other two thrillers that i have analysed as their age ranges are a lot higher compared to shutter island. As well as this it may simply down to the year that shutter island was released which was 2010 compared to the sixth sense which was released in 1999 and the silence of the lambs which was released 1991 which means due to the change in times the people who go to see thrillers has changed simply to the change in time rather than the themes included in shutter island compared to the themes in the sixth sense and the silence of the lambs.
